The University of Barcelona (UB) is Spain’s leading research-intensive university being the highest-ranking Spanish university in most international research league tables.
This allows to UB the membership in the League of European Research Universities (LERU), which is a prominent advocate for the promotion of basic research at European research universities. The university is distributed in several campuses and Faculties across the city of Barcelona.
The research in UB is organized in interdisciplinary and specialized institutes. Researchers participating in this project are located at the Medical School and Clinic Hospital, and are associated to the Neuroscience Institute of the UB.
The neurophysiology group, directed by Dr. Xavier Gasull, is interested in establishing the role of different ion channels and membrane receptors implicated in the detection of painful and itchy stimuli and shaping the excitability of sensory neurons of the dorsal root and trigeminal ganglia. Also, we study which alterations occur during chronic pain (inflammatory and neuropathic pain states) and chronic itch.
We are especially interested on ocular pain after inflammation, injury or dry eye disease. The group has expertise in the study of ion channels using electrophysiological techniques, imaging techniques and behavioral models of pain. Drs. Josep Valls and Jordi Casanova have extensive experience on clinical neurophysiology, with a special interest on conscious sensory perception and the physiology and physiopathology of neuropathic pain by studying nociceptive evoked potentials and reflex reactions to pain.
Also, they have been studying the participation of subcortical motor systems in the execution of movements, postural maintenance and reflex control (startle and prepulse phenomena).
