INT is recognized by the Italian Ministry of Health as a Scientific Institute for Research, Hospitalization and Health Care (IRCCS) belonging the public national and regional administration.

INT is a tertiary national referral cancer centre with an established leadership in the management of cancer pain and in palliative care.

The Palliative Care, Pain therapy and Rehabilitation unit (PPU) has a complete clinical program to diagnose, treat and study patients with pain due to cancer with outpatient and inpatients facilities where more than 1500 new patients with pain are seen every year. One genetic research unit is consistently collaborating with the PPU, access to psychology service is also available. The INT has a trial office and central research administrative resources. Research nurses are available and will be hired for the project. International collaboration is established with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology via the European Palliative Care Research Center.
